Seven years ago, I predicted that Hillary Clinton would be President if, and only if, George W. Bush did a really crappy job in his second term (then not even a reality). I was saying that our next President would be elected not on their credentials, but on perceived lack of performance on the Bush Administration. If George Bush did not develop his ability to articulate his policies by the end of his presidency, the country would yearn for one who would. If Bush did not reach across the political aisle in a decent way and compromise for the sake of the country, we would yearn for someone who would. If Bush did not unite the country on his war policies and work with the “other side,” even like Clinton did with his Republican Congress, we would yearn for a candidate who was a uniter. If our economy was falling like it is now beginning to, we would yearn for a President who would take care of us like FDR tried to.
Guess what? All those things are true. Bush can’t articulate his way out of a paper bag, didn’t cross the aisle for policies, didn’t gain support across the country for the war, and our economy is about to begin to recede because we haven’t cut government spending alongside tax cuts. Unfortunately, this causes the nation to hunger and yearn for the polar opposite of George W. Bush’s way of running the country.
John McCain isn’t that person. He is ingrained into Washington politics as much as anybody. Hillary Clinton isn’t that person; she’s as divisive as Howard Dean. Barack Obama is the only candidate who has a perceived uniting spirit. Whether he truly is a uniter is yet to be determined. But that won’t stop his current popularity in the Democratic race.
Thank you, Mr. President! The Depression we might now enter might just last longer with a New New Deal!
