Film Studies of the Apocalypse

Love it!! Both are favorite films of mine and it was really neat to see them pieced together along with the commentary of your classmates. It gave me some new thoughts about both films. Thanks!

If you recall, The Matrix takes place in the future after humans have “self-destructed” and created machines that have effectively brought about cataclysmic and catastrophic destruction of the world (“the desert of the real”). The hope of rescue by the “One” (Neo) brings about a restoration in the end (by life sacrifice, no less), and thus brings about a recreation of the world.

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe tells the story of a world (Narnia) where all is frozen and will be ruled by the White Witch until the real King comes and takes his rightful place as King of Narnia.

Both films may not be specifically about the “last days of the earth,” but the apocalyptic genre covers more than the “end of time” portion. Just as “eschatology” does not simply describe “end times” theology, but a holistic worldview theology, “apocalypse” does not necessarily refer to the end only.
