Reflections on Psalm 8

January 26, 2006, by Doug No comments yet

I recently had to reflect on the movie Contact for a seminary class. The character who has faith in the movie is rather open about science not being able to give us meaning. In fact, science tends to make us feel rather insignificant. The opening scene in Contact reveals just how small earth really is. So, if compared to the Universe, we are insignificant, how much more so to God?

Having been going through a vast array of feelings in the past month, I was able to bring things into perspective a bit more after reflecting on the Scriptures, particularly Psalm 8. If we are ready for it, God will reveal to us himself through the scriptures, wherever we are in life.

Psalm 8 says that we have been made a little lower than “heavenly beings,” which is likely a modest translation to say we are created a little less than God himself“David Wilkinson, The Message of Creation, p. 94″, which reflects to some degree the value implied in Genesis 1-2. Something today (no doubt the Spirit of God) spoke to me today through the scriptures, “You are special. You have a relationship with God. You can walk with God. You can hear from him, commune with him.” I don’t recall ever feeling it that profoundly. Saying I’m comforted by those thoughts, when compared to the disappointment I’ve felt in the past month, woudl be quite a mild, perhaps too weak, way of putting it.

Top 10 Reasons to believe in a Pre-trib Rapture

January 12, 2006, by Doug No comments yet

I’ve decided to update my previous post (about two years ago) to refine my list:

  1. Only a powerful Deity could work with two “chosen people” groups within history.
  2. A vanishing act is a pretty cool trick!
  3. Literal interpretation makes it easier to avoid wrestling with the mysteries of Scripture.
  4. It fits well with being pro-Israel in the Unites States
  5. Three comings of Christ for the price of two!
  6. At least the hermeneutic question is settled.
  7. Timelines are great fun for Sunday school classes.
  8. The Kingdom of God will be more dramatic if it’s entirely future.
  9. Being a minority theological position is a mark of following God more closely.
  10. “Hey, we can make millions on a 12-book fiction series (and we can throw in a 3-book prequel to boot)!”
