My Eschatalogical Position

August 19, 2004, by Doug No comments yet

After nearly two years of studying dispensationalism, Covenant theology, and a million positions on when the rapture will occur, I’ve finally, decidedly, come to a conclusion and landed on a position with which I can be consistent, clear, and content.

While my position is definitely not uncommon among most Christians, it is clearly the least common among anybody who has actually studied the biblical and theological material concerning the matter. But what I’ve come to on this is as biblical as all the rest. I would like to thank Colby Weinhofer for creating the terminology for the position we both hold ever so dearly.

We call this position the Pragmatic Apathetic position: it really doesn’t matter, so we really don’t care. In fact, after thinking about it even more, we think it would be more scholarly to consider ourselves “Historic Pragmatic Apathetic”: it’s never really mattered, and we still don’t care.

Whew…now that it’s out in the open, I’d like to move on to more important things…like life.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and Postmodern Thought

August 8, 2004, by Doug No comments yet

Over the past few months I’ve been seriously considering writing an essay on the philosophical web of understanding that comes from the book, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. In case you are not familiar with it, Douglas Adams (who is a British writer who got his start writing radio programs for the BBC in the early 70s) wrote a radio series that was beyond the norm for radiophonics at the time. It was incredible, and had a cult following. Still today, people are enthralled by its enormous endearment among science fiction fans, and those who really like British humour. It’s really a funny piece of literature, in book, radio, TV, and soon-to-be film format.

Anyway, what I’d like to do is study what Adams wrote in the 70s that reflects a postmodern mindset, and how what he has written really reflects the thinking of our time. Adams is a devout and proud atheist, and has spoken on why he is one, so there is much to tackle in his works.

I’m not sure if it will ever actually be written, but it is definitely something that has been in the back of my mind for quite some time, and I wanted to get it out. It would more or less be a literary commentary.
